7-month-old girl dropped off at hospital, safe

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Police in Bismarck say a 7-month-old girl who had been missing was dropped off at a local hospital and is safe.

LeahMae Morsette was brought to the Sanford Health emergency room at about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday by an unknown person. North Dakota has a Safe Haven law that allows a parent, or the agent of a parent, to leave an infant at a hospital without fear of being tracked down or prosecuted.

Authorities had issued an Amber Alert for LeahMae earlier in the day.

Before Tuesday, the girl was last seen at 1 a.m. on Monday, when she was captured on a surveillance video with her mother. The girl’s mother helped police with a search on Monday, but it was unsuccessful.

The mother was arrested Monday night on suspicion of child neglect, and couldn’t account for the baby. The Bismarck Tribune reports that formal charges against the mother are pending.
