6 arrests made following checkpoint near Sturgis

STURGIS, S.D. — A checkpoint conducted near Sturgis on Friday night resulted in 6 arrests, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The checkpoint was set up on I-90 at Exit 32 on the westbound off ramp. It lasted two hours with a total of 251 vehicles coming through.

The Highway Patrol says three drivers were checked for sobriety and two of them were arrested for DUI. Additionally, two drug arrests were made, along with one open container arrest and one revoked driver arrest.

The South Dakota Department of Safety announced that there would be sobriety checkpoints held in 19 counties throughout the month of July. They’re held monthly to discourage people from drinking and driving and are funded by the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety.
