Rapid City work release inmate back in custody

UPDATE: The inmate is back in custody.


RAPID CITY, S.D. – An inmate on work release has "escaped" by not returning to the Rapid City Community Work Center.

Charles J. Matteson, 52, was meant to return from his job Friday afternoon but didn’t.

His escape poses a possible threat to life or property, according to the work center. Pass along information to law enforcement immediately.

Matteson is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 185 pounds. He has brown hair and green eyes.

He goes by several other names: Charles Adkins, David Charles Edwards, Charles Thomas Hamon, Jeffrey Roger Joerll, Charles Mathison, Charles David Matteson, Charles Joel Matteson, Charles Joul Matteson, John Preston, Charles Walter Thomas, Darrel Dean Walter, William Charles.

Matteson was sentenced in 2017 to five years for unauthorized ingestion of a controlled substance in Pennington County. He was up for parole next May.
