5 KEY FACTS: RC Stevens boys basketball team in rebuilding mode

RAPID CITY, S.D. – If the Rapid City Stevens boys basketball team expects to make it back to the state tournament this season, head coach Chris Stoebner will have to rely on some inexperienced talent to get it done.

1. Rapid City Stevens failed to qualify for the State AA tournament for the second year in a row.

The Rapid City Stevens boys basketball team finished with a record of 10-11 last year.

The Raiders lost to Mitchell in the SoDak 16.

2. The Raiders have a lot of holes to fill on this year’s roster.

The raiders will be young this season, as far as varsity experience goes.

Stevens lost all five starters to graduation and eight seniors overall.

That included several key players like Jaden Haefs, Kolin Ray, Charles Christensen and Ben Goldy.

3. Rapid City Stevens fans will see a lot of new faces on the court this season.

It’s fair to say that this will be a rebuilding year for head coach Chris Stoebner and the Stevens boys basketball team.

“With the little experience we have, we’re going to go through growing pains,” said Stevens head coach Chris Stoebner. “But like I said, they’re going to learn and we’ve got four seniors that I hoping take that leadership role. But we also got juniors and sophomores that are going to have play big roles. So yeah there maybe some struggles along the way. But if we can keep competing and buying in, I like where we may be near the end.”

4. Raiders will count on inexperience this season.

Stevens has four seniors on this year’s team, Hayden Gebhart, Caden Dowling, Will Dorch and Nash Sobczak.

Although the Raiders will go through some growing pains, Stoebner feels his team will continue to get better as the season progresses.

“Everyday do I know what I’m going to get out of each one of the guys,” said Stoebner. “That’s what I’ve been telling them, can you bring it every single day? Even small growth from day to day is going to be important for us to gain confidence so we can be playing our best basketball by the end of the season. We’re inexperienced now. But after the ball tips off on Friday, everybody’s in the same scenario as far as the season’s starting.”

5. Stevens opens the season with a pair of games on the road.

Rapid City Stevens opens the boys basketball season on Friday, Dec. 9 on the road against No. 5 Pierre.

Then the Raiders will play Aberdeen Central on Saturday.

The Raiders home opener is Dec. 16 against Mitchell.
