ND annual tree lighting ceremony now virtual due to coronavirus

BISMARCK, N.D. — The pandemic has hampered plans for the annual lighting of the North Dakota state Christmas tree this year.

Gov. Doug Burgum and his wife, Kathryn, are now planning on livestreaming the tree lighting ceremony on Facebook this Tuesday evening. Afterwards, people can drive by and see the tree from their vehicle.

This year’s theme is “creating connections,” a reminder to stay connected socially while maintaining a safe distance this holiday season.

The North Dakota Department of Health reported a total of 598 new positive coronavirus tests on Monday. In addition, seven new deaths from COVID-19 were confirmed, increasing the cumulative number of fatalities to 927 since the pandemic began.
