3-year-old found safe with her dog after missing for six hours in Jackson County

JACKSON CO., S.D. – A 3-year-old girl and her dog are home safe after missing for six hours Monday afternoon in Jackson County.

Jackson County Sheriff Matt Haugen says the girl went missing shortly before 9 a.m. and was found around 3 p.m. He says the blue heeler, named “Pup”, stayed with the girl and “was kind of protective of her.” Over the six-hour period, the pair traveled roughly two miles from home through fields, ranches, and over hills.

“She was an adorable little girl who had more energy than planning skills,” said Haugen.

Several agencies responded to help find the missing child, including several dozen people. Haugen says first responders from the Kadoka and Philip Volunteer Fire Departments, Philip Ambulance, and Haakon County Sheriff’s Office responded. “Highway Patrol was ready to go with an aircraft, life flight sent out a helicopter, even a private citizen flew their own aircraft,” said Haugen. Other agencies were on call and ready to head out before the girl was eventually found.
