3 dead after 2-vehicle crash near Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D — Three people died and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash that happened west of Sioux Falls on Saturday afternoon.

An eastbound Pontiac Vibe travelling on Highway 42 crossed the center line and collided with a westbound Ford F-150 pickup. The pickup caught fire shortly after the collision.

Both male occupants of the Ford, 57 and 44 years of age, died at the scene of the crash and it is unknown at this time if they were wearing their seat belts.

The 39-year-old female driver of the Pontiac was pronounced dead at the scene. The two male passengers, ages 10 and 5, were transported to a Sioux Falls hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries. All three were wearing seat belts.

A part of Highway 42 was closed for a time following the crash, which South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate.

Names are not being released pending notification of family members.
