1+1 Winner: Laurie Hayes

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A music teacher is now able to give students what they most wanted to learn, all thanks to the 1+1 Giveaway.

NewsCenter1 and First Interstate Bank partner throughout the school year to gift teachers and faculty members with $500 to cover expenses outside their budget.

This year’s first winner is Laurie Hayes from Valley View Elementary.

Hayes teaches kindergarten through fifth grade music and sees about 300 kids daily. She can’t wait to buy her class ukuleles after her students begged her for guitar lessons.

“Ukuleles are a better size and a good beginning instrument, and we’ll put something together for our spring talent show that’s sponsored by the PTA,” Hayes said. “If I have any money left over, I will be building up my classroom library.”

Ellyn Vogul with First Interstate Bank says that teachers often pay for educational tools out of their own pocket. “To be able to do something more fun and more out-of-the-box is really awesome to see.”
