1+1 Giveaway – Paul McLaughlin
And as he accepted the $500 grant for his classroom, he reflected on what it meant to him with his students.
“I’m the one that got rewarded it,” he said to his class, “but you guys won this, so great job.”
A Western South Dakota native and Black Hills State graduate, his arrival at Newell Elementary was the perfect opportunity to return to the area after living and gaining teaching experience in Colorado.
As a student, Mclaughlin struggled in the classroom until a teacher made an impact on him and encouraged him to see the joys of education.
Now just beginning his own career as an educator, Paul wants to show his students the same kind of support as they progress through their academic journey and more.
“I want to be that positive male influence in a kid’s life, and then that just carries into education,” McLaughlin said. “To where if they get confused in a problem, they’re more comfortable to come to me and be able to talk.”
As to what his plans are for with the gift card, the brainstorming is a combined effort.
New books, study game accessories, roller chairs, and even a class pet were among the many suggestions offered up by the children. Things they and future students can enjoy as well.
“They make this job easy. I love coming to work everyday,” McLauglin said. “They make it fun, they make it exciting. There’s always something new that goes on.”
