1+1 Giveaway – Penny Austin

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. — When it comes to school, there’s no telling the impact that some teachers may have.

But for Penny Austin, a Special Education Teacher at Belle Fourche High School, you can measure the impact with the laughter that goes on in her classroom and the crowd of students in the hall when Mrs. Austin was awarded a $500 gift card in NewsCenter1 and First Interstate Bank’s 1+1 Giveaway.

Mrs. Austin began her teaching career at Belle Fourche five years ago and has been doing what she loves ever since.

“I just love working with the students. They teach me as much as I teach them,” Austin said. “Just seeing what’s going on in their lives, and when we are working together on a concept and all of a sudden it clicks and you know it’s clicked and it’s just amazing.”

In Mrs. Austin’s classroom, teaching carries a special meaning, whether it’s incorporating art or the classroom’s service dog Sheriff, her lessons teach kids skills they’ll use throughout their life.

“I try to tie things to real life. Because they’ll ask ‘ok, why do I have to do math?’,” Austin said. “Well, you want to be able to make purchases, you want to make sure you’re getting the right amount of money back and change.”

As for the money, Mrs. Austin says she’ll use it to buy more art supplies and fresh books for her classroom.
