1+1 Giveaway – Jessica Wuertzer plans to use the gift to help her students build life skills

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Another teacher this week received $500 as a part of NewsCenter1 and First Interstate Bank’s 1+1 Giveaway. Jessica Wuertzer is in her first year at Stevens High School as a structured academics teacher in the school’s special education department.

Wuertzer wasn’t expecting the gift, but she does have an idea of who nominated her for the giveaway.

“I’m actually shocked and surprised. I had no idea why the vice-principal is coming down, but I’m really excited. I’m excited to share with my colleagues and share with my students,” Wuertzer said.

She plans to teach her students how much $500 is and have her students brainstorm some ideas on how they should use the money, even though she already has some ideas of her own.

“The first thing that came to my mind was — we do what we call CBI. It’s Community Based Instruction. And so we take the kids and we got out into the community and we got grocery story shopping; gives them life skills, we buy stuff and then we come back to the classroom and we cook,” Wuertzer said. “So, I think a lot of the money will go towards those expenses out in the community.”

Thursday, Oct. 20, her class did the City of Presidents tour. They split into three groups to find all the presidents and the scavenger hunt. They also enjoyed a picnic afterward.

Currently, her plan is to use a portion of it to help her students learn life skills in the community, which will help her students adjust to independent living after graduating high school.

Wuertzer And Assistant“They need the real life skills, using money they have. I think that they need to know how to check out and all that,” Wuertzer said. “And we pay for it. The kids don’t have to pay for it. So, this will be a great addition for all of our cooking things that we do. Just getting them out in the community. A lot of the kids today, our students, teens I should call them, didn’t — weren’t familiar with the downtown and just…they don’t get out a whole lot and so those are just good opportunities.”

NewsCenter1 and First Interstate Bank team up to giveaway two $500 gift cards a month to a teacher to help them pay for resources that might be outside of their budget.
