1+1 Giveaway- Deb Daly

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Deb Daly teaches math to Sixth and Seventh graders at South Middle School, and then spends her evenings and weekends volunteering in the community her kids are a part of.

“I’ve been doing a little work with Woyatan since they took in our houseless, we do a community feed on Fridays with our houseless and now we’re doing it in there, and I’ve helped on other nights too,” Daly says.

South Middle School PosterShe has been spending her own money for years on her classroom and community efforts and events, and has some plans for how to use her gift card. Daly says she’ll start by asking her students what kinds of materials they’d like to see.

“We are working really hard on trying to support the OSEU’s, the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings, so that is a big thing, possibly getting some books maybe in here,” she said.

Ms. Daly has plenty of math books, but she wants her students to have some math games and fun reading materials so they can keep learning once they’ve finished their homework in her homeroom class.

“Math is a part of everything that we do, and kids think math is only adding, subtracting, multiplying, and divide, so they don’t like it,” Daly says. “So I’m trying to get them to see that math is huge.”

Ms. Daly believes that by being active in her community, she’s creating a better living and learning environment for her students.

“My favorite place is North Side Walmart, because that’s where most of my families are. And then a lot of times you’ll hear somebody hollering down the aisle, so I love going there because then I get to see them,” Daly adds.
