1+1 Giveaway – Bobbi Schillinger

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Bobbi Schillinger, a teacher at South Canyon Elementary, works with her kindergarten students on reading skills such as rhyming and comprehension. And with the $500 gift card she received as the most recent recipient of the 1+1 Giveaway, she now can purchase more “big books” for her classroom.

“I am super excited. I actually had just went to the PTA and asked the PTA if they would purchase some awesome big books for our classrooms because we don’t have very many of them for shared reading,” Schillinger explained. “And so this is super exciting because now I can just go buy big books for both sections of the kindergarten class and we can start that five-day shared reading program.”

Schillinger held many other jobs before becoming a teacher and has been a teacher for 11 years, 10 of which have been in the Rapid City area. The decision to become a teacher stems from a major milestone that she celebrated in her life: becoming an aunt to her niece.

“I loved reading to her and helping her work on letters and numbers and everything like that,” she said. “I just decided to go back to college, get my education degree and landed in kindergarten, which is great; never thought that this is where I’d really want to be, but I don’t want to be anywhere else.”

The big books she has her eyes on are exactly as they sound — large books with large writing for beginning learners that feature easy-to-follow material featuring rhymes to help students develop their skills.

Schillinger Working With Students During A Classroom AssignmentBeginning with her reading to them, Schillinger and the class then move to important concepts like sight words as they work through the text. As she takes them each day through different methods of learning different reading skills, they end the five-day program with a fun game where students are selected to pretend to be characters from the story they read. As part of the game, the rest of the class interviews their peers that are in-character.

Most importantly, however, they have fun as she watches her students grow during the beginning of their academic journey.

“It’s just a great environment to be in among, you know, these little minds that are just absorbing all this different information that you’re giving. It’s very, very rewarding.”
