10-year-old boy falls at Sunday Gulch Trail, transported to hospital

CUSTER, S.D. — A 10-year-old boy was rescued Sunday evening after he fell about 12 feet off some rocks along the Sunday Gulch Trail below Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park.

It was reported the boy had hit his head in the fall.

When crews arrived, they proceeded on foot with a wheeled litter basket for a hand carryout due to the terrain being too difficult for ATVs and UTVs. Paramedics were able to reach and treat the boy.

The boy’s mother was with him while the father had climbed out of Sunday Gulch to call 911.

The boy was placed in the litter and crews carried him out in rotating teams up the rocky trail, and he was able to respond to questions and speak as he was carried out.

He was placed in a waiting ambulance where he was then transported to the intersection of Highway 87 and Highway 89 where Black Hills Life Flight landed and took him to a Rapid City hospital.
