1 dead, 3 seriously injured in head-on collision

ROBERTS COUNTY, S.D. — One person has died and three others were seriously injured Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle head-on collision south of Browns Valley.

Just before 3 p.m. Friday a 2012 Toyota RAV4 was driving around a curve of Valley Avenue and drifted across the center line, when it collided head-on with a semi truck.

After the collision, the Toyota went into the ditch and rolled. The crash ejected the 35-year-old female driver from the vehicle, and she was pronounced dead at the scene — she was not wearing a seat belt.

All three passengers of the Toyota, ages 36, 27 and 20, sustained life-threatening injuries. Two of the passengers were transported to Sioux Falls and the other to Fargo, N.D. Seat belt use by the three passengers is under investigation.

The 37-year-old male driver of the semi-truck received minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.

Names of those involved are not being released pending notification of family members.
