Dress for Success helps empower women
Dress for Success Black Hills held its grand opening of their new location over the weekend. They now have a permanent location in the Rushmore Mall at the 'At Home' wing. They are outfitting women to look and feel their best.
They say when you look good, you feel good and your confidence increases. Confidence is a quality you need while interviewing for a job. The organization Dress for Success Black Hills has a mission to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and developing tools to help women thrive in work and in life.
They assist women to be better prepared for a job interview by dressing them in a new outfit, but the support doesn't stop there. They also give clients interviewing skills and follow up job skills as well. Then once the client gets a job, the organization gives them more clothes, so they have a week’s worth of clothing. The women must have a referral from one of seven community organizations, like the Department of Labor. The client also gets shoes, jewelry and a handbag.
The organization recently fitted their first client. Sarah Baker, the Executive Director for Dress for Success Black Hills says her favorite part was watching the client transform - not only with a new outfit but also a new outlook on life. "Watching her [the first client] come out of the dressing room with her first outfit and step up on our pedestal and seeing her entire persona transform. Just watching the confidence exude from her; it’s been like nothing I've ever experienced before. It's amazing, and I'm just so grateful that I get to see that every time I get to be here."
They are looking for additional board members, volunteers, as well as monetary donations to fund the new space and purchase items for the job interviewing process.
Baker says, "We could use all the help from the community that we can gather. If you are passionate about fashion, if you are passionate about interviewing or HR, if you are just plain passionate about helping the women in our community; we can use your help. "
The organization is solely suiting women for now, but their 2-year plan is to include men as well.
