Highway Patrol IDs Piedmont man in fatal motorcycle vs deer crash

A man who died Sunday in a motorcycle vs. deer accident on U.S. Highway 79 near Sturgis has been identified. The victim is Thomas Van Pelt, 39, of Piedmont.

MEADE COUNTY, S.D. - One person is dead after a motorcycle vs. deer accident on U.S. Highway 79 on Sunday.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, a Harley Davidson FLHTCI motorcycle was southbound on Highway 79 in Meade County, west of Bear Butte. Near mile marker 116, a deer entered the roadway and collided with the motorcycle. The driver was thrown from the motorcycle when it overturned.

The driver, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead. His is not being released by state officials pending notification of family members. 

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
