Chimney Canyon fire 100 percent contained

The latest on a wildland fire in Meade County.


March 9, 3:50 p.m.

The Chimney Canyon fire is 100 percent contained. Smoke will continue to hang over Interstate 90 from Sturgis to Black Hawk.

12:25 p.m.

As of 5:45 p.m. Thursday, the fire was 14.18 acres in size. Crews have secured the edges of the fire, so containment numbers are expected to grow on Friday. There will also be smoky conditions along the I-90 corridor from Black Hawk to Sturgis on Friday. Flames may be visible too.

March 8, 6:15 p.m.

As of 4:30 p.m., the fire was about 14 acres in size and 10 percent contained, burning on private, state and federal land.

The fire began in the 11000 block of Chimney Canyon Road, near Piedmont. According to the Pennington County Fire Service, two buildings were temporarily threatened, but firefighters stopped the threat.

There were no evacuations, but residents in the area were notified by law enforcement of the fire.

Due to the location, terrain and weather conditions, firefighters requested help from the North Haines and Black Hawk Volunteer Fire Departments and the Pennington County Fire Service. South Dakota Wildland Fire responded with engines, two hand crews and a dozer. The U.S. forest Service arrived with engines and crew members.

Other responding agencies: Pennington County 911, Piedmont Fire and Ambulance Service, Whispering Pines Volunteer Fire Department, Meade County Sheriff's Office.

4:15 p.m.

The fire, burning northwest of Piedmont, has grown to an estimated 5-7 acres. Despite the growth and amount of fuel available to the fire, crews are said to be making good progress.

According to Great Plains Fire Information, the fire began on private land and has spread onto U.S. Forest Service land. The fire is burning where the Ricco Fire left its mark in 2005.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Authorities are battling a wildland fire in Meade County. The fire is burning near Chimney Canyon Road and Elk Horn Road and is currently about 4-5 acres in size.
