Stevens baseball team set to begin season with new head coach

Posted: Updated:

The Rapid City Stevens baseball team is set to begin a new season later this month with a new head coach.

Luke Swartz is stepping down after six years with the Raiders organization to spend more time with his family.

Last year, the Raiders finished the regular season with a 12-18 record and lost to Pierre in the regional championship game.

Long-time assistant coach Steve Thomas will take over the program this spring.

"Steve Thomas is the new head coach," Luke Swartz said. "He came in the same year I did. So six years. This will be his seventh year obviously. So it should be an easy transition. I don't know the numbers or the amount of kids coming out. But I would say, it's going to be the same as it was before and in somewhat the same teaching. Everybody's got their own ideas. But it should be an easy transition with everything."

The Raiders open the baseball season on Saturday, March 17 at home against Rapid City Central.

Stevens will also host Lennox on March 24 and Harrisburg on March 30.

The Raiders wrap up the regular season on May 15 against Sturgis at McKeague Field.
