State Girls Basketball Preview: STM set to defend state title

RAPID CITY, S.D. -

St. Thomas more made history last season by becoming the first team ever in Class 'A', to win four straight, state girls basketball titles.

This weekend, the Cavaliers hope to make history again by becoming just the second team in any class to win five straight championships.

The Class 'B' Armour Packers were the first team to win five straight girls basketball titles back in the mid 1980s.

St. Thomas More enters the State 'A' Girls Basketball Tournament as the No. 2 seed.

The Cavaliers will play No. 7 Vermillion on Thursday, March 8 at 5 p.m in Watertown.

STM is 20-3, while Vermillion is 18-5.

Cavaliers head coach Brandon Kandolin says his team is focused on one game at a time and doesn't feel any added pressure about winning their fifth championship in a row.

"I think the main thing we focus on is that we can't think about the last year or any previous years," STM girls basketball coach Brandon Kandolin said. "It's a new team. A new group and they have to focus on what they need to do. The first thing is take care of business the first game. So six o'clock Thursday night, we have to make sure that we're prepared and they have to play a very tough Vermillion team."
