RAPID CITY, S.D. -

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

This year’s theme for the Rapid City Heart Ball was the Wizard of Oz. Community members came to raise money for the fight against heart disease and stroke, which are the number one killers in South Dakota.

People dressed in gowns and suits to take pictures, have dinner and participate in the silent auction.

Every year the event raises thousands of dollars for the American Heart Association. This year they are expecting to raise $95,000.

Medical Co-chair Dr. Kevin Weiland said everyone has been touched by heart disease, which is why the event is so meaningful.

“I think everyone has had some link to heart disease whether it be a family member, a mother, grandmother, son, daughter,” Weiland said. “We try to tap into that - their heart to give. And they do give and it's really quite warming.”

This is the 19th year the event has been held.
