Stevens has sights set on winning state wrestling title

RAPID CITY, S.D. -

Over the weekend, the Rapid City Stevens Raiders captured the Region 4A wrestling title for the second time in three years.

Now the Raiders hope to carry that momentum into the state wrestling tournament starting on Friday in Sioux Falls.

The Stevens Raiders are looking to win their first state wrestling title since 2011 after qualifying 14 wrestlers to the state tournament.

In addition, the Sturgis Scoopers also advanced all 14 wrestlers to the Class 'A' tournament, while Rapid City Central qualified 11.

Although, the West River teams have a solid chance at finishing in the top five, the Pierre Governors are the clear favorite to win their fourth straight state wrestling title.

"You know, I think Pierre is still the team to beat," Stevens wrestling coach Travis King said. "I think we have a team that can push them and could beat them. I think Sturgis has three returning state finalists and they have a young team that's continuously gotten better. And Central is right there too. They have three or four kids, even with losing one or not, that were right there at the state level that will be at the top. I feel like our programs out here will compete. The top five is where you're always reaching and our kids maybe reaching a little higher right now because they know that they're capable."
