Stevens wrestlers gear up for region tournament

RAPID CITY, S.D. -

There won’t be any shortage of top talent when the South Dakota Region 4A and 4B Wrestling Tournaments get underway on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Rapid City Stevens’ Carold Heier Gymnasium.

The Stevens Raiders, who have had an outstanding season, hope to win their second region title in the last three years.

Sturgis is the defending Region 4A team champion.

But Rapid City Stevens enters the tournament as the number two ranked team in Class 'A' followed by Pierre.

Sturgis, Rapid City Central and Brandon Valley round out the top five.

The Raiders return three individual region champions, Cody BeVier, Spencer Stockman and Dante Colicheski.

Stevens head coach Travis King expects it to be a tough battle this weekend.

"Last year, it was close," Stevens wrestling coach Travis King said. "I think we finished third and finished third behind those two teams. We were fifth in the state. Central was fourth and Sturgis was third. All those programs at the top have great traditions and got good teams. There's a lot of good teams in the 32 or three teams that are in the Class A. Post-season, anything happens."

The Region 4B Wrestling Tournament kicks off on Saturday at 9 a.m., while the Region 4A Wrestling Tournament starts at 10 a.m.
