RAPID CITY, S.D. -

Love was in the air for Ellsworth airmen Saturday.

The Kid-X Club, in partnership with Ellsworth Air Force Base shared the love in their first Valentine's Day celebration at Rushmore Mall. Children and parents crafted Valentine's Day cards for airmen both at home and returning from deployment, including the airmen that returned from Guam.

Families decorated the cards with heartfelt drawings and stickers, plus some sweet messages on the inside, in hopes of reaching the goal of 300 cards. They will be picked up and distributed among Ellsworth officers next week, just in time for Valentine's Day.

The valentine cards will support airmen who may be alone during the romantic holiday and gave kids the chance to say 'thank you' to their heroes.

"By doing something nice, [we] have to do something nice for them,” said Ava Aguilar, a preschooler with Youth and Family Services. “Because it's valentine's day!"

"They go without families and save our own state and city, too,” said another Youth and Family Services Preschooler, Zoe Aguilar.

After designing their cards, kids had their faces painted and were given free food and toys.
