2018 Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo begins

Posted: Updated:

The 60th edition of the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo officially kicked off Friday evening. Action-packed events will last until Feb. 4.

The Stock Show will give cattlemen an opportunity to show and sell their stock, which represents some of the highest quality breeds and is important for improving the genetics of American cattle and the quality of American beef.

However, the event is much more than just cattle sales. There is fun for the whole family, including a rodeo, concerts, a Boots and Beer Festival, and the World’s Smallest Rodeo. This year will feature the show’s first colt starting clinic, where experts will show how they can take a wild colt and transform it from raw to finished in only three days.

The Stock Show has grown from featuring only three breeds in 1958, to 10 this year, along with over 400 total consignments. Now, it’s one of the finest and most highly regarded stock shows in the country.

“The Black Hills Stock Show currently rates fourth in terms of size,” said Ron Jeffries, general manager of the Stock Show. “Of course, you have Houston, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Denver, you know those kinds of shows, big shows, with big population bases. So, for a small town like Rapid City to be able to host an event like this and bring that many people to town, really says something about the quality of the show.”

Jeffries expects that more than $1 million will change hands during this year’s show.

Parking is free, as well as admission to all non-ticketed events.
