RCPD 2017 DUI numbers higher than in years past

Posted: Updated:

The Rapid City Police Department released the 2017 DUI numbers, and they are slightly higher than in years past.

Ending the year, the RCPD made 1,012 DUI arrests. Fourteen of those arrests happened between 6 p.m. Dec. 29 and 6 a.m. Jan. 1.

In 2016, the department made 973 DUI arrests. In 2015, they made 875 DUI arrests.

"I don't think there was a specific reason why there was a slight increase in DUIs this year,” said RCPD Lt. Andrew Becker. “I think every year the Rapid City Police Department is very active when it comes to finding impaired drivers and getting them off the road. I think the slight increase is kind of just a natural occurrence that occurred, but we do have DUI officers we are actively patrolling. We do want to get intoxicated drivers off the road."

The police department is also hopeful that the new ride-hailing app Lyft will encourage intoxicated people to not get behind the wheel, in turn lowering DUI numbers this year.
