Permanent RCFD chief to be announced soon

RAPID CITY, S.D. -

Rapid City residents can expect the announcement of a permanent fire chief in the coming weeks.

Mayor Steve Allender says a decision will be made by mid-January. The new chief would replace Interim Fire Chief Rod Seals. Seals has filled the place of Mike Maltaverne, who retired in November of 2016.

Allender says whoever fills the role must be able to work alongside others and also be independent.

“But also someone not so willing to please that they would do something that would be questionable,” said Allender. “Department heads have to be able to stand up to the mayor, have to be able to change rules, adapt, and those are all important qualities that have to be taken into consideration.”

Allender has a few ideas of who could fill the role but is waiting to announce the decision.
