Second flu death reported in South Dakota

BRULE COUNTY, S.D. - The South Dakota Department of Health (SD DOH) has recorded the second flu death of the season.

The victim was a Brule County resident above 64 years of age.

The first flu death of the season was reported in Day County last week. The victim was in his or her 70s. Each year, an average of 33 flu-related deaths is reported to the department.

To date, there have been 68 hospitalizations in the state this season out of 421 confirmed cases.

The SD DOH classifies influenza as being widespread in the state, but the severity is low.
