Black Hills Dance Theatre presents 'The Nutcracker Suite'

Enchanted toys, fairies and a land of sweets - they are all part of one Christmas classic's debut in Rapid City.

The Black Hills Dance Theatre presents "The Nutcracker Suite" on Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Fine Arts Theater. It's a traditional winter ballet performance scored by Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. A lost girl explores a candy kingdom with a magical toy soldier.

The ballet troupe will hold two performances throughout the day at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Two professionals from Ballet Arizona play the parts of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier - and over 90 local dancers perform various roles.

Watching "The Nutcracker Suite" is a tradition for some families. The Black Hills Dance Theatre feels honored to be a part of that with this retelling.

"Some people come because they love the arts in general. And it's just a fun holiday thing that people have begun to do," said Kenna Draxton, guest choreographer for the 2017 "Nutcracker" season. "For me, it's a little special because this is my first year in nearly 25 years not performing 'The Nutcracker.' I just retired in June, so this is filling a small void to participate in."
