Christmas light recycling containers placed throughout Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. -

It's that time of year again. With most Americans beginning to hang their Christmas decorations, the Solid Waste Division of the Rapid City Public Works Department is placing Christmas light recycling containers across town.

Last year, the division collected approximately 11,500 pounds of broken and unused lights. According to Sustainability Coordinator Beth-Anne Ferley, many people are buying new lights rather than fixing the old. Ferley says the best thing to do is recycle the lights and keep them out of our landfills.

"We are not wasting those natural resources,” said Ferley. “You know, metals are made from natural resources. Plastic is made from oil. So we can take that plastic; they will cut out the metals. So we can recycle the plastic and make it into something else. Plastic gets made into carpet, gets made into fleece, gets made into playground equipment."

The Solid Waste Division prefers residents to drop lights into designated drop off locations, but lights can also be placed in blue recycle bins. Christmas lights can be dropped off through the end of January.
