Volleyball Sweet 16: Faith upsets Philip, Belle Fourche advances to state

SPEARFISH, S.D. -

The Philip volleyball team dominated the regular season winning 27 out of 29 matches. Then the Scotties rolled through the region playoffs with victories over Lower Brule and New Underwood.

The Scotties had a chance on Tuesday night to qualify for the State 'B' Volleyball Tournament for second time in three years.

The only team standing in their way, the Faith Longhorns. The two teams squared off in the Sweet 16 at Spearfish High School.

The Scotties held a two sets to one lead against the Longhorns. But Philip dropped the last two sets and lost to Faith, three sets to two.

Faith now returns to the State 'B' Volleyball Tournament for the first time since 2011.

Women's Volleyball: Yellow Jackets defeat Hardrockers

The Black Hills State University volleyball team defeated South Dakota Mines on Tuesday night in a five set thriller, 3-2.

The scores were 28-26, 25-14, 25-23, 25-15 and 15-6.

Cheyenne Palu led the Yellow Jackets with 15 kills, while Ellise Lech had 13 and Kenzie Kasmer had 10.

Mikkella Reese recorded 16 kills for SD Mines.

Black Hills State improves to 11-15 overall and 8-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. SD Mines falls to 3-24 on the season and 1-15 in the RMAC.
