One dead after officer-involved shooting in north Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. - Rapid City police responded to an active shooter situation in the 300 block of Viking Drive in north Rapid City on Saturday at around 12:15 p.m.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired from a residence, and upon arrival, the shots continued. The Rapid City Police Department prioritized evacuating surrounding homes. Authorities say the suspect vacated his home and threatened an officer with his gun and fired a shot. An officer then returned fire, killing the suspect, 48 year old Joseph Paul Hogen. During the shooting, no officer or other citizens were injured.

Rapid City Police Chief Karl Jegeris says there is no current threat at this time, and public safety has been restored.

The Pennington County Sheriff's Office is working scene security and the Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting. According to Chief Jegeris, an investigation is standard operating procedure following an officer-involved shooting.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office will be releasing more information as it develops.
