Made for Shade Event

Posted: Updated:

Lynne Riddle and Dr. Lycia Scott- Thornburg join Anya to talk about an event happening Wednesday, June 14 at the Holiday Inn from 5:30-8:00pm.

Made for Shade is a non profit organization that was founded in 2007 by Dr. Lycia Scott-Thornburg, and supported by her partners-Dr. Victoria Finley, Dr. Briana Hill, Dr. Jason Noble, Dr. Tamara Poling, and Dr. Gregory Wittenberg from the Rapid City Medical Center in conjunction with Riddle's Jewelry and community volunteers.

Skin cancer is one of the most common of all the cancers, it is also one of the easiest to prevent. Made for Shade is a non-profit event used to purchase shade structures, shaded playground equipment, and/or plant trees on public school playgrounds and school events to provide shaded areas for children. The intent for this organization is to educate the public on the effects of the sun and to stress the importance of sun safety and skin protection. UV (ultraviolet) light is the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., which is when children are outside playing during recess or at sporting events, and this shade may be their only form of skin protection.

This Wednesday will be an evening of fine wine-tasting and gourmet foods to go toward the organization. Proceeds to this year's event will be used to provide shade for children on local playgrounds and school events. Riddle’s Jewelry is raffling off a diamond necklace. Raffle tickets start at $5. Tickets for the Made for Shade Event are $60 per person or $100 per couple.
