RAPID CITY, S.D. -

United Blood Services (UBS) of Rapid City is constantly coming up with unique ways to recruit donors in a season where blood donations typically decrease. Throughout the year, UBS offers incentives to donate.

The organization’s mission is to provide a safe and ample blood supply to hospitals. Donations decrease as summer vacation kicks into high gear - yet the need for donors remain high.

“The school year’s ending, the summer is beginning, and we tend to see about a 20 percent drop in blood donations," says Donor Recruitment Manager Brittany Sigel. "So we are looking for donors to help keep that blood supply throughout the summer.”

May is Beef Month in South Dakota. Donors who make time to give blood at the Rapid City UBS center or mobile blood drive unit during May and June are automatically entered to win one of three gift cards for beef, courtesy of the South Dakota Beef Industry Council. Donors will also be treated to a Jack Link’s beef stick.

The ultimate opportunity is to win a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Five names will be drawn during a Facebook Live event on Wednesday, July 12. Four finalists will receive a $100 gas gift card. And Sigel also says "donors that are under 18 will be eligible to win one of several iPad minis.”

UBS is currently accepting all blood types. An individual can donate blood up to three times per year. The center accepts both walk-ins and appointments.
