Rushmore Plaza Civic Center almost up to ADA compliance

RAPID CITY, S.D. - If you've been to the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center recently, maybe you've noticed some changes in remodeling. The parking lot, restrooms, and all handrails are now up to date with Americans with Disabilities Act compliance.

With some help from the city, the Civic Center tackled the project, even though it did come with a higher price tag. That's because the updates came with unexpected problems. DETAILS OF THE PROJECT

Now, according to Executive Director Craig Baltzer, everything is in compliance except for just one area.

"We changed a number of things and it did cost a little bit of money, but the great thing was - is that now every place is compliant except the Barnett Arena, and that's why we are going to have to decide what to do with that Barnett Arena here in the very near future,” says Baltzer.

The city must present a plan to the U.S. Department of Justice by September 2017, laying out fixes to civil rights violations. DETAILS
