Make-A-Wish South Dakota: Cash's Wish

Posted: Updated:

SPEARFISH, S.D. - Cash Roberts was born with lungs too small to support his body. Doctors performed a tracheostomy, inserting a ventilator to help him breathe. Now, his mother, Wendy Roberts, says he’s a happy and healthy boy.

"He's grown and matured. He still needs the ventilator, but he can come off of it during the daytime, and he's doing wonderful at this point,” said Wendy.

His family had been involved with Make-A-Wish® South Dakota for a while, but it was Cash's career goal that led to his wish. When he grows up, Cash wants to be a NASCAR driver. His father, Mike Roberts, says Cash's favorite driver is Kyle Busch.

"His wish was to go to go to a NASCAR race, and we ended up getting the opportunity to go to Charlotte, North Carolina to watch the All Star Race. And he got to meet Kyle Busch, his favorite driver - the M&Ms car - so yeah, that was pretty cool,” said Mike.

Cash had his wish granted from Make-A-Wish® South Dakota in May of 2016. Because of donated airline miles, Cash's entire family could experience a vacation together.

"Because of Cash's condition, we don't get to take vacations, like family vacations, overnight. So, it was our first vacation as a whole family with Cash and the girls,” says Mike.

Because of the family experience, his sister Kaitlyn says there were lasting memories made.

"You don't get to see that very often. He's at home all the time, and when the race comes on, he just gets so excited and his face just lights up. And you don't get to see that very often," said Kaitlyn.

Make-A-Wish® South Dakota is in the process of granting 70 wishes for children. They have granted more than 1,250 wishes since 1984. You can be a part of making wishes come true by donating unused airline miles during the Wishes in Flight Campaign on March 2, 2017.
