BHSU Men's Basketball Team Works on Rebuilding Starting Rotation

Posted: Updated:

It may be tough to recognize Black Hills State's men’s basketball team when the Yellow Jackets take the floor Saturday for their home opener against Northern State.

In fact, the Yellow Jackets return just a few players with experience.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 12-14 season in which they averaged 74 points per game.
But this year, they must find a way to make up 46 of those points after losing their top two scorers, Nick Ongarato and Riley Ryan.
Black Hills State returns only two starters, Wyatt Krogman and Patrick Mendes.
Krogman averaged nine points and four assists per game last season, while Mendes scored seven points per game.

Head Coach Jeff Trumbauer says, "We have senior and two starters back and only five guys on our 12 man travel roster that have seen or have been here before. So we've got a lot to put together in a very short period of time. That's what the advantage of playing those games down in Texas is you get an opportunity to see where you're at and and what you need to work on."

The Yellow Jackets have 10 new faces this year, including Zach McLemore, a transfer from Colorado Christian, who averaged 15 points per game.
With a young team short on experience, coach Trumbauer believes his team has a lot of potential.

Coach Trumbauer says, "I really like our team. I think we've had a very good fall. I feel like we've addressed some of the things that we need to improve our program. We're a little longer. We're a little more athletic. We've got more depth on our team then we've had in year's past. But we are young and that's a good thing. It's exciting. We've got a lot of time, a lot of talent in this group that we can develop.">

The Black Hills State men's basketball team opens a four-game home stand starting Saturday, November 19 against Northern State.
Then the Yellow Jackets will host Yellowstone Christian College on Wednesday, November 23.
Conference play begins on December 2.
