Daily crime and accident statistics will be posted here from the 77th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally between Aug. 6-13. 

Law enforcement agencies are stressing common sense and situational awareness for drivers in an effort to keep injuries and fatalities to a minimum. In recent years, the most deadly rally was the 75th anniversary event in 2015, which drew a record 739,000 bikers and had 14 fatalities. In 2016, the South Dakota Highway Patrol reported a record-low three deaths.

Aug. 12 Fatal Crashes

At 7:06 a.m., U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 50, two miles west of Sturgis: A motorcycle westbound on U.S. Highway 14A failed to negotiate a right hand turn. The motorcycle was laid down on its side and slid into a guard rail. The male driver, 18, from Piedmont, died as a result of his injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 2 p.m., South Dakota Highway 79, mile marker 28, eight miles east of Host Springs: A 2003 Chevrolet K1500 pickup was northbound on South Dakota Highway 79 when the female driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle went off the road and eventually rolled, The driver, 29, from Gering, Neb., was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aug. 12 Injury Crashes

At 1:17 p.m., U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 34, about two miles southwest of Lead: A motorcycle was westbound on U.S. Highway 14A when the driver failed to negotiate a left-hand curve. The male driver, 64, from Sheldon, Vt., received serious non-life threatening injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 7:46 p.m., U.S. Highway 16/385, mile marker 44, two miles east of Hill City: A motorcycle was eastbound when the rear tire blew, causing the driver to lose control. The male driver, 54, and the female passenger, 52, both suffered minor injuries. They are both from Galveston, Texas and neither was wearing a helmet.

At 10:31 p.m., U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 44, two miles east of Deadwood: A motorcycle was westbound when the driver lost control. The motorcycle went into the ditch and rolled. The male driver was thrown from the motorcycle. The driver, 54, from New South Wales, Australia, suffered minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 10:51 p.m, Interstate 90, mile marker 34, three miles east of Sturgis: A motorcycle was traveling on Interstate 90 when the driver drove over a large tarp and lost control. The male driver, 30, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.


Aug. 11 Injury Crashes

At 7:31 a.m., Interstate 90, mile marker 52, Black Hawk: A vehicle westbound on Interstate 90 rear-ended a semi truck. The female driver of the vehicle, 21, was wearing a seat belt and received minor injuries. The female passenger, 21, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. Both are from Rapid City. There were no injuries to either the male semi-truck driver, 56, from Los Angeles, or the male passenger, 21, from Monroe La. Both were wearing seat belts.

At 12:58 p.m., Wildlife Loop, mile marker 17, 15 miles east of Custer: Two motorcycles were southbound on Wildlife Loop when the lead motorcycle slowed down and was rear-ended by the second. The male driver of the first motorcycle, 56, was not injured. He was not wearing a helmet. The driver and passenger of the second motorcycle were thrown from the motorcycle. The male driver, 55, was not injured. The female passenger, 52, received minor injuries. Both were wearing helmets. All three people are from Maple Grove, Minn.

At 1:15 p.m., U.S. Highway 16A, mile marker 33, 10 miles from Keystone:  A motorcycle was southbound on U.S. Highway 16A when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The motorcycle went off the roadway. The male driver, 53, from Walton, Ky., sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 4:30 p.m.,  Intersection of U.S. Highway 16 and South Dakota 244, three miles south of Hill City:  A motorcycle was entering the intersection when the driver tried to avoid a vehicle turning left .The motorcycle went down on its side and both occupants were thrown. The male driver, 51, suffered minor injuries. The female passenger, 51, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. Both occupants are from Rapid City. Neither were wearing a helmet.

At 10:30 p.m., Interstate 90, mile marker 26, three miles west of Whitewood: A motorcycle was westbound on Interstate 90 when it slowed down for deer in the roadway. A second motorcycle rear-ended the first.  The two occupants on the first motorcycle, both from Cedar, Minn., suffered minor injuries. The male driver, 42, was not wearing a helmet. The female passenger, 41, was wearing a helmet. The male driver of the second vehicle, 61, from Dickinson, N.D., was not injured.


Aug. 10 Fatal Crash

At 7:12 a.m., U.S. Highway 16, mile marker 19, seven miles west of Custer: A 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan was eastbound when the driver lost control and the vehicle went into the ditch. The 27-year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. One of three other occupants, a 20-year-old male, sustained life-threatening injuries. The other two passengers, a 21-year-old male and an 18-year-old female, both received serious non-life threatening injuries. All were taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital. The investigation continues.

Aug. 10 Injury Crashes

At 7:40 a.m., South Dakota Highway 34, mile marker 48: A motorcycle was eastbound on South Dakota Highway 34 when it hit a deer that had entered the roadway. The male driver, 67, from St. Paul, MN, received serious non-life threatening injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 9:34 a.m., U.S. Highway 85 at Colorado Boulevard in Spearfish: A Mazda was northbound on U.S. Highway 85 when a motorcycle entered the roadway from the left and the two vehicles collided. The male driver of the vehicle, 76, from Deadwood, was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt. The 71-year-old male driver of the motorcycle from Baker City, Ore., sustained minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 12:47 p.m., Interstate 90, mile marker 111, one mile east of Wall: A motorcycle pulling a trailer was eastbound on Interstate 90 when the driver lost control. The 67-year-old male driver from Dubuque, Iowa was thrown from his motorcycle. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious non-life threatening injuries.

At 1:35 p.m., South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 75, eight miles east of Custer: A motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 87 when the driver entered a curve and the male driver lost control. He was thrown from the motorcycle. The driver, 67, from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 3:03 p.m., South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 54, 10 miles southeast of Custer: A motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 87 when the male driver lost control of the motorcycle, which went off the roadway and down an embankment. He was thrown from the motorcycle. The driver, 58, from Minot, N.D., sustained minor injuries. A female passenger, 49, from Bakersfield, Calif. sustained minor injuries.

At 3:43 p.m., Wildlife Loop Road, 11 miles east of Custer: A motorcycle westbound on Wildlife Loop Road was traveling around a curve when the male driver lost control. The driver, 66, from Hugo, Minn., suffered minor injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 4 p.m., U.S. Highway 85, Spearfish: A motorcycle was northbound on U.S. Highway 85 when it hit an oil slick on the roadway. The male driver laid the motorcycle down on its side. The driver, 34, from Ronald, Wash., suffered minor injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.


Aug. 9 Fatal Crashes

On Sunday, Aug. 5, 2017, at 11:54 a.m., U.S. Highway 385, mile marker 117, five miles south of Lead, a male, 80, from Port Arthur, Texas, was driving a motorcycle southbound when he failed to negotiate a curve. The motorcycle left the roadway and the driver put the motorcycle on its side. The driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Rapid City hospital. He was not wearing a helmet. The driver died Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 5:02 p.m., U.S. Highway 16, mile marker 62, Rapid City: A Maryland woman died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash. DETAILS

On Thursday, Aug. 10, at 3:44 a.m., Interstate 90, two miles east of Kadoka: A 2005 Dodge Durango was westbound on Interstate 90 when the driver lost control. The vehicle went into the ditch and rolled. The 37-year-old female passenger from Rapid City, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The 58-year-old male driver from Black Hawk suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Philip Hospital. He was wearing a seat belt. A three-year-old male from Rapid City, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. The investigation continues.

Aug. 9 Injury Crashes

At 9:27 a.m., U.S. Highway 85, in Belle Fourche: A motorcycle was southbound on U.S. Highway 85 when the driver activated his turn signal and slowed down. A southbound pickup rear-ended the motorcycle. The male motorcycle driver, 54-years-old from Laconia, N.H., suffered minor injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. The female passenger, 50-years-old from Laconia, N.H., was thrown from the motorcycle. She was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. The male pickup driver, 47-years-old from Nisland, was not injured.

At 10 a.m., South Dakota Highway 44, 30 miles east of Rapid City: Two motorcycles were eastbound on South Dakota Highway 44. One motorcycle rear-ended the other. The male driver of the first motorcycle, 54-years-old from Winter Haven, Fla., was thrown from the motorcycle. He suffered minor injuries and was wearing a seat belt. The male driver of the second motorcycle, 49-years-old from Wales, Fla., was not injured. He was wearing a helmet.

At 12:52 p.m., Nemo Road, four miles east of U.S. Highway 385: A motorcycle was eastbound when it hit a bump and the driver lost control. The male driver suffered minor injuries. He is 39 and from South Minneapolis, Minn. . He was wearing a helmet.

At 3:30  p.m., Norris Peak Road, eight miles west of Rapid City: A motorcycle was northbound on Norris Road when the driver lost control and crossed the centerline. The motorcycle hit an eastbound motorcycle. The male driver of the first motorcycle, 67-years-old from Eureka, Mo., received minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet.  A 65-year-old female from Sidney, Neb. was driving the second motorcycle. She was wearing a helmet and sustained serious non-life threatening injuries.

At 3:46 p.m., U.S. Highway 16A, mile marker 51, four miles south of Keystone: The motorcycle was northbound on U.S. Highway 16A when the male driver lost control. He was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. The driver, 44, is from Hoffman Estates, Ill.. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 4:55 p.m., U.S. Highway 16, mile marker 12, 12 miles east of Custer: A 62-year-old male was driving a motorcycle westbound on U.S. Highway 16 when he failed to negotiate a turn. The motorcycle went into the ditch and the driver was thrown from the motorcycle. The driver, from Buckhannon, W.Va., received serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 4:55 p.m., Interstate 90, mile marker 57, Rapid City: A Chevy Impala was eastbound when it slowed to merge into traffic. It was rear-ended by an eastbound motorcycle. The male driver of the motorcycle, 25, from Vancouver, British Columbia, was thrown from the motorcycle. He received minor injuries and was not wearing a helmet. The female driver of the vehicle, 76, and female passenger, 67, were not injured. Both are from Rapid City and both were wearing seat belts.


Aug. 8 Fatal Crash

At 8:54 p.m., Interstate 90, mile marker 39, seven miles east of Sturgis: A motorcycle was eastbound on Interstate 90 when the driver lost control, laying the motorcycle on its side. The driver, a 27-year-old male from Fort Wayne, Ind., was not wearing a helmet and suffered fatal injuries.

Aug. 8 Injury Crashes

At 10:28 a.m., U.S. Highway 85, mile marker 31, five miles north of Deadwood: A motorcycle was northbound on U.S. Highway 85 when the driver failed to negotiate the curve. The motorcycle struck a delineator post as it entered the ditch. The male, 60, from Carrollton, Ga., suffered life-threatening injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 11:17 a.m., U.S. Highway 16/385, mile marker 27, one-half mile north of Custer: A motorcycle was southbound on U.S. Highway 16/385 when he quickly slowed down. The motorcycle was put on its side and the driver was thrown from the motorcycle. The male driver, 33 from Golden Valley, Minn., suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 12:45 p.m., Vanocker Canyon Road, mile marker 12, five miles from Sturgis: A motorcycle failed to negotiate a left hand turn and the motorcycle collided with a small tree. The 78-year-old driver from Cave Creek, Ariz., suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 12:50 p.m., U.S. Highway 385, mile marker 118, 10 miles south of Deadwood: A motorcycle traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 385 went off the roadway and hit a sign, throwing both occupants off the motorcycle. The male driver, 59, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. The female passenger, 57, sustained life-threatening injuries. Both are from Kearney, Neb. and both were wearing helmets.

At 1:22 p.m., Antelope Creek Road, eight miles north of Box Elder: A 2006 Ford Escape was northbound when the driver lost control and the vehicle eventually went into the ditch. The 16-year-old female driver from Box Elder suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. She was wearing a seat belt.

At 1:30 p.m., South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 61, 12 miles east of Custer: A motorcycle was northbound on South Dakota Highway 87 when the driver lost control while traveling around a curve. The male driver, 60, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. The 59-year-old female passenger sustained minor injuries. Both were from Saginaw, Mich. and neither was wearing a helmet.

At 4:23 p.m., South Dakota 34, mile marker 3, seven miles west of Belle Fourche: Two motorcycles were westbound on South Dakota Highway 34. The first motorcycle was attempting to make a U-turn at a slow rate of speed. The second vehicle attempted to swerve around the first motorcycle and the two motorcycles collided. Both drivers were thrown from their motorcycles. The first driver, a 52-year-old male from Springfield, Mo., suffered life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. The second driver, a 42-year-old male from Casa Grande, Ariz., sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 4:35 p.m., South Dakota Highway 79, mile marker 119, entrance to Full Throttle Bar and Campground: One motorcycle was northbound and two other motorcycles were exiting the campground, failing to yield. All three motorcycles collided. The male driver of the first motorcycle received minor injuries. The other two motorcycle riders both received minor injuries.

At 4:44 p.m. South Dakota Highway 34, mile marker 38, Sturgis: Two motorcycles were westbound on South Dakota Highway 34 when the first motorcycle slowed down and was rear-ended by the second motorcycle. The first driver, a 48-year-old male from Crown Point, Ind., was thrown from the motorcycle and received serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. The second male driver, 36-years-old from Stanley, N.D., was not injured.

At 5:04 p.m., South Dakota Highway 79, mile marker 121, 20 miles north of Sturgis: A group of motorcycles were southbound on South Dakota Highway 79. The first motorcycle collided with a deer that was in the roadway and the motorcycle went into the ditch. The second motorcycle also collided with the deer, went into the ditch and collided with a barb wire fence. The male driver of the first motorcycle, 47, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. The female passenger, 47, was wearing a helmet and sustained minor injuries. Both are  from Kansas City, Mo. The male driver of the second motorcycle, 56, had serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. The female passenger, 46, was wearing a helmet and sustained minor injuries. Both are from Kansas City, Mo.


Aug. 7 Injury Crashes

At 10 a.m., U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 21, 10 miles southwest of Spearfish: A motorcycle was westbound on U.S. Highway 14A in Spearfish Canyon when the male driver tried to miss water on the road. The motorcycle went off the road and the driver was thrown from the motorcycle. The 63-year-old driver from Winnipeg, Manitoba received minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 11:39 a.m., South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 74, 13 miles north of Custer: A motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 87 when the driver swerved to miss a squirrel on the roadway. The driver lost control and the motorcycle went into the east ditch. The driver, 45-years-old from Wagga, Wagga, New South Wales Australia, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 12:55 p.m., U.S. Highway 16A, mile marker 36, 15 miles east of Custer: A motorcycle was eastbound on U.S. Highway 16A when the driver quickly applied the brakes and went into a skid. The motorcycle started to tip onto its side and eventually traveled across the center line, colliding with a westbound motorcycle. The two occupants on the first motorcycle each suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. The male driver is 57-years-old and was not wearing a helmet. The female passenger is 58 years old. Both are from Rawlins, Wyo. The second motorcycle driver, a 54-year-old male from London, Ohio, sustained minor injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 1:54 p.m., South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 61, 11 miles east of Custer: A motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 87 when the driver lost control and the motorcycle went into the ditch. The 63-year-old male driver from Austin, Texas suffered minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 3:30 p.m., Wild Life Loop, mile marker 12, 20 miles east of Custer: A motorcycle was southbound on Wild Life Loop when the driver lost control and was thrown from the motorcycle. The male driver, 62-year-old from Magnolia, Texas, suffered minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 8:13 p.m., South Dakota Highway 79, mile marker 118, five miles northeast of Sturgis: A Dodge Durango was turning left on South Dakota Highway 79 when it was rear-ended by a motorcycle. The male driver of the vehicle, a 26-year-old from Friday Harbor, Wash., was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt. The 50-year-old male motorcycle driver from Denver, Colo., received serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.


Aug. 6 Fatal Crash

At 10:15 a.m., U.S. Highway 85, mile marker 116, 11 miles south of Buffalo: A 2009 Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 85 and crossed the center line. A southbound semi swerved to miss the vehicle, and the two vehicles collided. The male driver of Corolla, 25-year-old from Manti, Utah, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 44-year-old driver of the semi, from Dickinson, N.D., was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Aug. 6. Injury Crashes

At 9:50 a.m., South Dakota Highway 34, mile marker 38, four miles east of Sturgis: A motorcycle was stopped, facing northbound at the traffic light, leaving the Steel Pony/Lamphere campground. A second motorcycle was leaving the Kick Start parking lot to go eastbound on Highway 34. Both motorcycles collided in the intersection. The male driver of the first vehicle suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He is 62 from Belle Fourche. He was not wearing a helmet. The second driver, a 62-year-old male from Royalton, Ill., sustained minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 2:53 p.m., U.S. Highway 385, mile marker 89, seven miles north of Hill City: Two motorcycles were southbound on U.S. Highway 385 when the first slowed down to make a turn and was hit from behind by the second motorcycle. The male driver of the first vehicle, 54-years-old from Cameron, Wisc., and the female passenger, 38-years-old from Conroth, Wisc., both suffered minor injuries. Neither were wearing a helmet. The male driver of the second vehicle, 61-years-old from Castle Rock, Colo., sustained minor injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 3:33 p.m., Interstate 90, mile marker 178, 13 miles west of Murdo:  The driver of a motorcycle lost control due to a high gust of wind. The motorcycle went off the road. The male driver, 42, from King George, Va., suffered life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 3:51 p.m., U.S. Highway 83, mile marker 67, one mile south of Murdo: Two motorcycles were traveling north on U.S. Highway 83. The first vehicle braked and the second vehicle rear-ended the first.  The driver of the first motorcycle, a 60-year-old male from White Lake, S.D., was not injured. The passenger, a 61-year-old female from White Lake, suffered minor injuries. The second driver, a male,  sustained minor injuries. He is 56 from Sierra Vista, Ariz.

At 5:28 p.m., South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 75, 11 miles north of Custer:  A motorcycle, driven by a 37-year-old male from Regina, Saskatchewan, was northbound on South Dakota Highway 87 when the driver lost control. The motorcycle went off roadway. The driver suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 6 p.m., U.S. Highway 16, mile marker 44, Hill City: Two vehicles were westbound off of U.S. Highway 385 onto U.S. Highway 16. The first motorcycle braked and the second vehicle rear-ended the first. The first driver, 33 years old from Saukville, Wisc., suffered minor injuries. The second driver, 57 years old from Plymouth, Wisc. was not injured. Both are males. Neither were wearing helmets.

At 6:45 p.m., Vanocker Canyon Road, mile marker 13, five miles south of Sturgis:  A motorcycle was northbound on Vanocker Canyon when the driver lost control. The male driver, 68 years old from Franklin, Texas, was thrown from the motorcycle. He suffered minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 7:24 p.m., Interstate 90, mile marker 244, four miles west of Reliance: A motorcycle was westbound when the driver lost control while traveling on an overpass. The driver, 59-year-old male from Brownsburg-Chatham, Quebec suffered life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 7:25 p.m., South Dakota Highway 79, mile marker 114, four miles north of Sturgis:  A motorcycle was northbound on South Dakota Highway 79, when the motorcycle  swerved to right and collided with a motorcycle that was parked on the west shoulder of the roadway. The male driver of the first motorcycle, a 32-year-old male from St. John, IN, was not injured. The female driver of the second motorcycle, 28-years-old from Boston, MA, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. Neither driver was wearing a helmet.

At 8:17 p.m., U.S. Highway 385, mile marker 118, four mile east of Deadwood: A motorcycle was eastbound on U.S. Highway 385 when the driver failed to negotiate a left-hand turn. The vehicle went off the road and the driver was thrown from the motorcycle. The female driver, 40 years old from Smithwick, S.D., sustained life-threatening injuries. She was not wearing a helmet.

At 8:30 p.m., U.S. Highway 16A, mile marker 51, 12 miles south of Keystone: A motorcycle was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 16A when the male driver lost control. The driver, 67 from Wellington, Ohio, suffered minor injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 8:38 p.m., South Dakota Highway 79, mile marker 112, seven miles south of Full Throttle Saloon: A motorcycle turned right to avoid emergency vehicles and overturned on the shoulder of the road. The male driver, 42, and female passenger, 55, both suffered minor injuries. Both were from Sioux Falls and both were not wearing helmets.

At 8:46 p.m., Interstate 90, mile marker 33, one mile east of Sturgis: A motorcycle was eastbound on Interstate 90 when it hit a deer. The driver lost control of the motorcycle.  The male driver, 51 from Tooele, Utah, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. The female passenger, 51 from Rushville, Utah, sustained minor injuries. The male driver was not wearing a helmet.


Aug. 5 Injury Crashes

At 11:54 a.m., U.S. Highway 385, mile marker 117, five miles south of Lead: A male, 80, from Port Arthur, Texas, was driving a motorcycle southbound on U.S. Highway 385 when he failed to negotiate a curve. The motorcycle left the roadway and the driver put the motorcycle on its side. The driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Rapid City hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 1:02 p.m., Intersection of Nemo Road and Potter Road, eight miles west of Rapid City.
