Sen. Thune Talks To Students About His Job

Wednesday, Senator John Thune made three stops in the Rapid City area, one of which was to visit some elementary school students.

The children at Calvary Christian School had the opportunity to meet the senator and ask him questions about his job.

Senator Thune made a quick stop to speak with some fifth grade students who are currently learning about the U.S. Government.

They have been anticipating this day for weeks. The fifth grade students at Calvary Christian School are currently learning about the 3 branches of government.

Kathy Coats, a 5th grade teacher at Calvary Christian, says, “But it still seems pretty distant to them, so if they can get some up close learning, where they actually get to speak with someone of  Mr. Thune’s stature, we’re delighted."

The students’ fifth grade teacher made a call earlier this year to see if the senator could make some time for the kids during one of his visits to the Black Hills. So, he agreed.

Senator Thune says, “These are our future leaders, and I always enjoy the opportunity. And one of the fun parts of my job is the opportunity to interact with young people and to talk with them a little bit about what I do for their government, and, more importantly, to hear from them."

These students had hundreds of questions prepared and were anxious to hear his answers.

They each made a card with a detailed letter inside for the senator.

Although they are only ten years old, this visit opened the eyes of many of the students to what their futures may hold.

Coats says, “Hopefully, this will make a memory for them and make them want to be involved in government."

The students all had the opportunity to take pictures with Senator Thune after the Q&A session.
