2010 Census Count Underway

If people knock on your door to ask how many people live there don't be alarmed, they're just doing their job.

Although the 2010 census count is still a year away, early operations have started in South Dakota.

And for the first time ever field staff going door to door will use hand held GPS computers to help ensure geographic accuracy.  The high tech gadgets will greatly reduce problems caused by paper maps in previous census counts.

Census Enumerator Rebecca Moser-Eckmann says, "In the old days they used to have to carry these great big maps and they would have to put dots on the maps and stuff.  These are just a little hand held unit.  You bring it up and say where it is and point and put a little dot on the unit and that's exactly where the house is.”

More than 145 million addresses will be updated and verified in the early census counting.
