Sturgis is trying to expand its city boundaries. Commissioners and the mayor are working on annexing sections of land surrounding the city.
Mayor Maury LaRue says one area east of the city has to do with the Sturgis Rally. He says all the people that use those facilities have an impact on the city of Sturgis, yet the city is not receiving economic revenue even though they are providing police and fire services.
The Sturgis Mayor Maury LaRue says, "It's really not about getting a gain, although there will be a gain. The city of Sturgis is looking to the east and that's only one of four directions the city is looking at. But that area in particular is an area that is of a like community. We're talking about businesses that came to development as a direct result of the Sturgis Rally, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally."
The mayor says completing the annexation process can take time.
