Whip Cracks On Privatizing SDSM&T

Earlier in the week, Republican Majority Whip for the State Legislature David Lust made announcements that he would propose a bill that would privatize the School of Mines and save the state money.

On Friday, Lust rescended that statement.

The bill was met with resistance from both the Board of Regents and the School of Mines.

Lust said privatization of the School of Mines would allow them more freedom from state regulations, but Tech relies heavily on state support to operate.

So, Lust decided maybe it was a bit early.

Lust says, "I think it's better to be comprehensive rather than rushing into something with an incomplete product. So, I'm hoping a summer study will flush things out, have a better product, it will be more comprehensive that addresses a wide variety of issues."

Lust believes that South Dakota's universities should be allowed to explore more options should they want to be independent.
