The Don't Thump Your Melon Program at Rapid City Regional Hospital received a big donation from Kohl's department store.
On Saturday morning, store officials presented a check for over $18,000 to Rapid City Regional Hospital. The money will be used to purchase helmets for area children. Following the check presentation, around 300 kids received free helmets as part of the Don't Thump Your Melon Program. The program is designed to educate children about the importance of preventing head injuries.
Kim Johnson, the Regional Health Events coordinator, says, "They say like 80 percent of the injuries, head injuries that happen on a bike. If they'd been wearing a helmet, it would not have been a problem. We actually had a child come today that brought his helmet back that he'd gotten last year from us. And he had wrecked real bad and it had a big crack in it. That's one thing, if you have a crack in your helmet, you want to get a new helmet because they're not good anymore."
