Travel Up this Labor Day

AAA predicts nearly 10 percent more travelers are on the road this weekend nationwide.

Some travel forecasters say that maybe a sign that Americans feel the economy is improving.

Here in South Dakota travel is expected to be up as well, at least 11 percent.

More people are expected to hit the roads and travel at least 50 miles away from home which is up over last year.

Here’s where some people said about the travel this year:

"No, there hasn't been much traffic, and it's a beautiful day out to drive," says Randi Eckmann.

"Traffic has been fantastic the whole trip.  We haven't hardly run into any congestion at all.  We've made it through with no problems, so it's been better than expected," says Jack Hettwer, who’s traveling from Yellowstone.

Nationwide about 34 million Americans are expected to hit the road this weekend, and AAA says that’s up over air travel.

While some people are hitting the roads this weekend, others are staying home spending time with family, and even having a holiday barbecue or going fishing.

Sunday afternoon, some people got out those fishing poles and relaxed around different lakes and creeks hoping to catch a fish.

Some people say it's just nice to enjoy the beautiful weather outside, and others say they like the family time.

So what does Labor Day weekend mean to you?

Here’s what some people had to say:

"Labor Day weekend is a time to spend with family.  I'm a single mom and I brought my nine-year-old down here to try to catch a fish," says Dayna Adams of Rapid City.

"Just relaxing after working all week and just hanging out," says Dan Herman of Rapid City.

Others say it's a time to remember our service men and woman and how hard they work overseas to protect our freedoms here at home.
