Proper Tag Placement

With each month, brings a new group of motorists in need of renewed registration tags.

South Dakota’s current license plates will be valid until 2015.

The Treasurers Office along with law enforcement officials are reminding drivers to place tags in the appropriate position.

It seems like no big deal, right? As long as current tags are displayed, does it matter where?  According to city and county officials it does.

Many drivers in Rapid City have their current tags stuck over last years and maybe even two years prior.  According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, this isn't just a way to start a unique sticker collection, it's against the law.

Trooper Derrick Mann says "The sticker needs to placed in the lower right hand corner and we've had issues were people don't want to sticker the sticker over another so they put it on top or on the other sides.  I've actually seen them in all four corners and that is illegal it needs to be in that bottom right hand corner."

The county is doing its part to remind drivers to keep their plates clean and clear them when replacing tags.  Registration cards are reminding drivers to remove old tags and place new ones in the lower "right" hand corner of the plate.

Chief Deputy Co. Treasurer Penn Annette Brant says, "When plates are initially issued there’s a place that tells where to put those.  People build those up you will see them around town where sometimes there are over on this side sometimes they are up here. The correct area is right here."

The county also has tag removers available for purchase at the courthouse.  If you are unable to peel the tag off by hand.

The state is asking all drivers to be compliant and display tags properly.
