If you tend to complain about the shape of South Dakota roads compared to nearby states, it might be justified.
South Dakota’s roads rank 12th in the nation in state highway performance and cost-effectiveness, falling four spots from recent foundation's previous annual highway report.
South Dakota ranks 4th in total highway disbursements, 26th in fatalities, 30th in deficient or functionally obsolete bridges and 1st in urban interstate congestion.
As it has every year since 2001, North Dakota ranks 1st in the nation in state highway performance.
Montana moves up three spots and now ranks 2nd in the nation.
