SD Million$ Supporting Education

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan says South Dakota will receive $26.3 million to support education jobs.

The money will help South Dakota keep thousands of teachers in the classroom working with students this school year.

Rapid City is getting $2 million but, Rapid City's new School Superintendent Timothy Mitchell says it's more of a wash instead of windfall.

Superintendent Dr. Timothy Mitchell says, "We've been told that next month we will receive the allocation of $2 million and we will account for it being spent through our normal payroll procedure.  But it's $2 million less we will be receiving in state aid so it will just be flowing through and it will be used to support the staff and salary and benefit packages that have already been negotiated for the upcoming school year."

But, Mitchell does say the federal money will help the state avoid potential cuts next year to educational programs and some jobs.
