It's not just the first day for the younger generation; many students in the Black Hills also began their college careers. The School of Mines held its freshmen orientation Monday.
New students met with faculty and staff to help get them adjusted to college life. Incoming freshmen say they are excited for their first fall semester.
SDSM&T Freshman, Noah Larson, said, "I'm pumped to go up here. It's a sweet campus, sweet location, great city, and there are a lot of cool people here so far."
"There's a lot of new people on campus. I'm new too. I'm interested in meeting new people. I'm gonna try and stay involved in all the programs I can," said freshman Jacob Denton.
The students aren't the only ones hard at work. Faculty members are also preparing for the upcoming school year. Every year, staff and teachers at the School of Mines work to improve the way they do things. Those working in the career center say it starts with getting students motivated.
Darrell Sawyer, from the School of Mines, said, "We do a series of career work shops to try to encourage them. We have a career fair in the fall, which we always encourage freshmen to go to as well as our other students. To get them prepared early on in that career preparation and development."
Classes also began at Black Hills State in Spearfish on Monday.
