eBooks Available at the Rapid City Public Library

In July Amazon announced eBooks are now outselling hardbacks by 80 percent.

And this week the company announced that it has even sold out of its two latest models of the Kindle, the electronic eReader sold by the company.

Even the Rapid City Public Library is now making strides to keep up with this popular technology.

They're available 24/7.  You won't have to make a trip to the library, and perhaps best of all they’re available at no cost to you.  eBooks are the latest thing to available from the Rapid City Public Library.

Rapid City Public Library Director Greta Chapman says, "You'll see titles just like you would if you were in a Netflix account or an Amazon account, click what you want and it downloads to your portable device."

Chapman says you can download the eBooks to your laptop, your cell phone, just about any anything except the popular Kindle or iPad, that is.

"It's marketplace economics of capitalism and that's you know the economy of America.  And so Amazon and Apple have chosen to not offer the availability of eBooks to libraries," says Chapman.

The downloadable books will stay on your device for one to three weeks, depending on popularity.  According to Chapman eBooks are cheaper and they fit in with the library's green initiative.

The Rapid City Public Library remains a very popular place to be, meaning hardback books aren't a thing of the past just yet."

Briana Hildebrand says, "I like to read just a regular old fashioned book, because there's more of a sense of satisfaction once you finish a book."

However, others are taking advantage of this new service by borrowing online books for their classes.

Ken Liston, who uses eBooks for school, says, "It's also nice to have all the information on one screen.  That way you can go back and review right away."

At least for now, good old fashioned books are still the libraries most popular attraction.  But Chapman says people are curious and expects the eBooks to take off in no time.

If you would like to download an eBook just visit the link.  All you will need is a valid library card, internet access, and an eBook compatible device.
