Custer’s Gold Discovery Days Celebration

Gold—it's something we'd all like to have a little bit more of.  It was discovered in 1874 and helped form Custer, a town with rich traditions and a knack for attracting tourists.

From dawn until dusk, Custer's Gold Discovery Days celebration is bringing the tourists for a bit of fun that could very well last the whole weekend.

Cece March, the chairman of the Arts and Crafts Festival, says, "It's just great.  They love the celebration."

Custer kicked off the event Friday with the Arts and Crafts Festival.  People from the area and surrounding states came to show off their wares and make a few extra bucks.  One man who builds benches and other furniture from old torn down barns says he sets up shop just for fun.

Homer Berdahl, a stand owner, says, "We have come here every year.  This is the first year I've participated"

But the Crafts Festival is just the beginning.  The festivities start as early as 5:30 a.m. with a hot air balloon rally and events last through the evening, when the laser light show begins.

Susie Weber, a stand owner, says, "There's quite a few people here.  Custer's been very busy recently, so we expect to do really well."

And even the colonel himself is excited.

Colonel Custer says, "It's just a lot of fun.  It's just away for a lot of people to get out and have some good old fashion fun in celebration of the first discovery of gold in the Black Hills."

The Arts and Crafts Festival runs all weekend.  For more on the events, visit the link.
